1. Retro Glam
Red lips paired with tons of black mascara and winged black liner ruled the runways, includind Diane Von Furstenberg’s. Pretty and powerful, the combo is a Mad Men
look sure to drive men cuh-razy. Trend tip: Skip the lipliner, and use a lipbrush for precision. Define and fill in brows to complete the look.
2. Lashing Out
This Fall mascara takes center stage as the dramatic star of your eye look (see Lanvin). Forget lengthening and separating; it’s time to pump up the volume. We’re talking layer upon layer on top, and layer upon layer on bottom. To build lashes out, always wait for each coat to dry before reapplying. To perfectly fan lashes, always wiggle the wand in the direction you want lashes to set.
3. Pretty Tipsy
Hair and makeup, move over (but don’t go too far away)! A huge focus for Fall is nails. Gone are the days of the single-shade mani. In its place? The eclectic, two-toned French manicure, which made an appearance at Jason Wu. But instead of white for the tip, select seasonal shades like maroon, burgundy, navy, camel, or grey.
4. Next to Naked
Need a beauty break from sculpting and contouring a full-glam face? Join the movement to go nude (spotted at Rag & Bone). Create a canvas of no-color color with a palette consisting entirely of taupe, tan, beige, brown and grey. Use these neutrals to provide depth and texture, versus add color.
5. Blush Up
To fake that first-love flush, dust and swirl bright blush low on the cheeks (like makeup artists did at Marc Jacobs) or higher on the cheekbones (instead of directly on the apples of the cheeks). For the more adventurous, take the rosy hue all the way to the temples.
6. Mixed Metals
Metallics played nice together at Roberto Cavalli. For a futuristic and supersexy makeup look, go ahead and mix up your bronze, silver and gold shadows with your champagne, copper and gunmetal liners (or vice versa). Anchor metallics with a matte brown, black or grey shadow for textural contrast.
7. Gemstone Lids
Summer’s festive Caribbean brights give way to rich, opulent gemstone shades for sultry Fall eyes (we saw them at Vera Wang). Sweep shimmering amethyst, sapphire or emerald across the lid and lower lashline to emphasize your eye shape and create dimension. Blend upward towards the browbone and outward towards the temple.
