5 Essential Pieces You Need To Layer Like A Pro

Jessi Malay wearing Topshop Embroidered Jeans

Happy Tuesday my loves!!

I’m back in LA after the most amazing trip to London!! I’ll be posting more of my London looks to the blog this week, but wanted to start with this pink + white layered look! What I love most about layering is being able to mix and match my fall and winter pieces and always experimenting with fresh looks. Although layering has been around for a long time, I love that it feels updated every season. I put together a guide to the 5 essential pieces you need to layer in style this season along with all the shoplinks you need to step up your layering game!! :)

PS- By the end of the week you guys will be able to shop ALL my Instagram looks directly from the shop section of my blog (including this one above)!! I’m so excited to finally launch this section of my blog and have a place where you guys can find all the items I’m wearing. Stay tuned <3

Look #1: Oversized Sweater/ Slouchy Cardigan

The key to layering oversized and chunky sweaters without looking like an eskimo is to wear slim-fitting bottoms to balance out the look. I usually like to throw on a cozy chunky knit over my skinny ankle jeans and sock boots, this trick really accentuates your body and takes your cozy knit to the next level. To add some extra warmth, I like to throw on a thick long trench or structured coat to dress up the look.

Look #2: Blanket Scarf

Blanket scarves are one of my best secrets to staying chic and warm throughout the winter months! Not only are they really simple for anyone to pull off, but they are cozy and affordable! Blanket scarves are lifesavers for strong winds..I’m always one to sacrifice my warmth to wear that cute new moto jacket I bought, so I love adding a cozy oversized scarf that can shield me from the wind!! It’s also a great way to add a pop of color or print to your look without having to think too hard about your outfit :) If you’re wearing a really big and chunky scarf, make sure to wear heeled booties to balance your proportions.

Look #3: Bomber, Moto or Suede Jacket

If you guys have been following my blog for a while, you guys I know I have a HUGE obsession with bomber jackets..so I still manage to wear them during winter!! Even if you live in a colder climate, wearing your bomber jacket under a fuzzy or teddy coat will keep you warm and chic at the same time! If you have a basic neutral, black or olive bomber, layer it under a fuzzy or teddy coat with a light print to add texture to your look and thank me later :)

Look #4: Turtleneck Sweater

One of my key rules for layering is to dress in thin under-garments that are sophisticated and classy. Think of a turtleneck as your base, try to go for a slim-fitting cashmere style and sticking with neutral colors such as white, beige, navy and then adding your bigger layers.

Look #5: Teddy or Faux Fur Coat

Teddy bear coats and faux fur are having a major fashion moment right now. What’s not to like? They’re chic, cozy and appealing. Paired with a turtleneck, denim and booties is just one of the countless ways to style these coats. And best of all, draping your jacket over your shoulders always makes your outfit look fancier than it actually is!

Layering TIPS!!

  • If you’re wearing an oversized cardigan or sweater, keep your under-layers more fitted
  • Make sure there’s a balance between thin and heavy layers so you don’t look bulky
  • DRAPE Your Jacket!! This is my go-to style trick for making your outfit chic while staying warm
  • Stay away from wearing all one-color in winter which can sometimes make your outfit feel flat and icy- add creams, pinks, and light prints to play up your look
  • Double up on coats..wearing a thin bomber or varsity jacket under a teddy coat will keep you warm and stylish at the same time! And wearing contrasting textures will add some dimension to your look and make you forgot about the cold.
  • If your winter coat is a bit heavier than you want, add a thin belt to accentuate your waist!
  • Last but not least, make sure you aren’t mix and matching too many colors that aren’t in the same color family! I always like to stick with a neutral color palette and add a bold color or print to one of my pieces.

What are some of your favorite pieces to stay warm this winter?!

XOXO, Jessi
