Face Primer Dupes for Your Skin!

Not all face primers are created equal, but some have great, affordable dupes!  Primer is a topic of conversation that I always see in my inbox, whether it’s a dupe request or simply needing to know what primer will work best for your skin concern.  Here I’ve gathered a list of fourteen excellent face primers with an average cost difference of $31!  That’s THIRTY ONE DOLLARS you could be saving. Smashbox Photo Finish Original Primer ($39) vs Maybelline Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser ($5)

Both of these primers have a silky smooth texture thanks to a higher content of silicone.  The silicone helps to smooth over pores, lines, and roughness in the skin, and gives your makeup something to stick onto.  You will find that foundation and powder blends easily over top of these kinds of primers.  Both are great for people with all skin types looking for a basic yet effective face primer!   Dupe Level:  A

Chanel Le Blanc de Chanel Multi Use Illuminating Base ($45) vs  L’Oreal Magic Lumi Face Primer ($13)

These are two fantastic products that will help give you a natural looking glow!  They are similar because they both have the same type of pearly sheen that becomes translucent when blended out, but they also are both multi purpose.  You can use these as a base underneath makeup, mix them in with your foundation for some extra glow, or use on top of makeup as a highlight.  Both are very thin and lightweight on the skin, which makes them great for all skin types.  Great for anyone that wants a luminous look to the skin.  Dupe Level:  B

Tarte Timeless Smoothing Face Primer ($39) vs L’Oreal Studio Secrets Magic Perfecting Base ($8)

These primers are thick and have a whipped texture with a high silicone content that is meant to fill in lines and wrinkles as well as enlarged pores and roughness.  These are best used by pressing into the skin with your fingers or a sponge so that they can smooth out as much as possible!   These primers are perfect for mature, aging skin, or those of us with super-sized pores.  Dupe Level:  A

Benefit PoreFessional ($31)  vs  NYX Pore Filler ($11)

Benefit PoreFessional is one of the most popular primers on the market, and NYX Pore Filler is an almost perfect dupe for $20 less!  Both are thick, balmy primers that lean on the dry side.  They’re designed to fill in pores as much as possible without leaving a greasy film behind, and are best used in small doses.  Can be used under makeup or alone!  Great for all skin types that have enlarged pores.   Dupe Level:  A

Make Up For Ever Step 1 Equalizer Mattifying ($36)  vs  Rimmel Stay Matte Primer ($5)

The Make Up For Ever mattifying primer is my holy grail oil control product right now!  It immediately eliminates shine on the skin, and feels almost dry, as if your pores have closed up.  It keeps my oily summer skin under control better than anything I’ve ever used!  But Rimmel Stay Matte is a great, inexpensive alternative.  This has a similar effect on the skin, and although it doesn’t control oil for quite as long, it will get you by.  They do have a different texture (MUFE is thick like a balm or mousse, whereas Rimmel is thinner, like a lotion) but both are great for people with oily skin!  Dupe Level:  C

Smashbox Photo Finish Blemish Control Primer ($42)  vs  ELF Blemish Control Primer ($6)

These primers are not only similar in texture and appearance, but they have the same ingredients too!  That makes a great dupe!  Both of these are a thin, lotion consistency, and both are white (even though both bottles are a pearlescent turquoise).  The active ingredient in these primers is 2% salicylic acid, which is what you’ll find in lots of acne treatments.  Salicylic acid increases cell turnover and helps keep pores clear of sebum and debris, which causes breakouts.  Both also contain a small amount of silicone and glycerin, which help keep makeup in place all day.  Dupe Level:  A

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer ($52)  vs  NYX Angel Veil ($16)

Both of these primers have a really incredible texture on the skin, like silk, and feel both hydrating and mattifying at the same time.  They go on like a lotion and fill in pores just slightly, enough so that your skin looks flawless even without makeup over top.  Both are oil free and great for all skin types!  Dupe Level:  B
