We’re in a Dewey Defeats Truman moment when the polls and the pundits boldly asserted with no room for doubt: New York Republican Governor Thomas Dewey was going to defeat President Harry S. Truman on Nov. 3, 1948. The Chicago Tribune‘s famous headline was wrong. Likewise, had the country followed conventional wisdom and good sense, this cover would be a celebration. Today it is a reminder that wishes don’t always come true, other than the profound wish among most of us that this brutal campaign and anything like it again is finally over.”
