Gourmet 'The 28' — archive image

Gourmet’s The 28 appeared in our May 2010 archive as a mid-top sneaker combining a tan upper, contrasting white sole and visible sole detailing. The archived description identifies suede and a mesh cuff, with stitched trim around the toe. The appeal is the contrast between a traditional-looking upper and a more athletic-looking base—not evidence of tested sporting performance.

Reading the archived design

The retained photograph is a reference for this particular colour combination. It does not establish the exact cushioning technology, current availability or the condition of a surviving pair. Treat The 28 as a historical release when comparing resale listings; do not assume another colourway or similarly named shoe has identical materials or construction.

Condition checks before buying

  • Ask for clear daylight photographs of both shoes, including the soles, toe trim and cuff. Look for bald patches, staining or uneven texture on the upper rather than relying on heavily filtered images.
  • Check the mesh and lining for tears and inspect the sole edge for separation. Ask for close-ups of visible sole detailing where damage or deformation is suspected.
  • Compare wear on both heels. If inspecting the pair in person, check the sole’s condition rather than assuming a clean upper means the whole shoe is sound.

A seller’s description should identify the actual pair, its size and any known repairs. Photographs alone do not authenticate a listing or establish how the shoe will perform after years of storage. We have not inspected or wear-tested a surviving example.

Fit matters more than the silhouette

Try the pair with your intended socks where possible. Distinguish a secure mid-top fit from pressure around the ankle, and check toe space and heel movement. If buying remotely, confirm sizing information and return terms; do not infer comfort or durability from the archive photograph.

Care for mixed materials

Identify each material before choosing a cleaner. Begin with gentle dry brushing appropriate to the finish rather than applying smooth-leather polish across suede or mesh. Ask a shoe-care specialist about stubborn stains or fragile older materials before wet cleaning.

Our boot-care guide explains why finish-specific care matters; it is not a cleaning prescription for this mixed-material sneaker. The boot guides also offer useful fit and construction questions, although their boot-specific details should not be assumed to apply to The 28.
