I sat down with Musical Diva Mercedes Jones and asked her all the questions you wanna know. After almost 30 years in this industry she hasn’t lost a step and is still on top.
BT: Hi Mercedes thank you for sitting with me, your home is lovely.
MJ: Thanks Becky and thank you, the move was hard but necessary.
BT: Yeah I was sorry to hear about your husband and longtime manager Jayson, how are you and the girl’s holding up?
MJ: It was hard at first, even though we knew it was coming, losing someone you love is never easy. But we were loved, Jayson loved us with every fiber of his being, and being loved like that, feeling his love for our family, that means everything.
BT: So do you think love is in the cards for you again?
MJ: I don’t know. I don’t know if we get one love or more. Jayson wanted me to be open to love again, he didn’t want me spending my life lost and alone. So I am open to it if nothing more than because that is what Jayson wanted for me.
BT: Okay so what first got you into music?
MJ: Oh wow I don’t know, I mean I have loved music for as long as I could remember. My mom always said that I came out of the womb singing.
BT: Who inspired you to make music?
MJ: I was always inspired by Aretha Franklin, Patti Labelle, Chaka Khan, Whitney Houston, Maraiah Carey. And I can’t forget Beyonce, she is the one who gave me my big break.
BT: What is your creative process like?
MJ: Oh wow okay I mean mostly me in front of a piano and just let the music flow. It’s nice to know I still got it though and people want to see me and hear what I have to say.
BT: What is one message you would give to your fans?
MJ: Follow your dreams, it doesn’t matter what you look like, who puts you down. I was told that I didn’t have the right look to be a singer and look at me now. I have won awards, even competed on Dancing with the Stars and won. I was blessed, I am blessed. It’s a great thing.
BT: What is the most useless talent you have?
MJ: Oh man, okay I can pick things up with my toes.
BT: What is something you are bad at?
MJ: I can not cook to save my life. I spent so much time being mom and the Diva that something had to be left and that wayside. Cooking was it.
BT: Do you sing in the shower? What songs?
MJ: Oh any song that comes to mind. I don’t really have a specific song I sing, I just sing whatever pops in my mind as I am showering.
BT: What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?
MJ: I am not sure, I have always loved writing so I might have been a writer in another life.
BT: What was the best tour you have ever had?
MJ: I really loved doing the USO tours. It meant a lot to get to perform and have fun with the members of our Armed Forces as well as their families.
BT: What is your favorite song to perform?
MJ: That’s like picking my favorite child, I can’t just choose one.
BT: What is the most trouble you’ve ever gotten into?
MJ: Yeah even I know not to admit to anything like that. Lol. I just mean I don’t really try to get into trouble. I like to be an example.
BT: What is the best advice you’ve been given?
MJ: Be true to myself. No matter who puts you down, who says you can’t, prove them wrong.
BT: Okay being a mom and a performer can’t be easy, how do you do it?
MJ: My girl’s make it easy, they are my rocks, they light up my world and anything they could ever need I would give them.
BT: How do you maintain your glow? You are 42 and still love like you are in your 20’s?
MJ: I just work out twice a week, try to eat healthy but I do enjoy myself, enjoy my life. You only get one, so what you do with it matters.
BT: What’s next for you?
MJ: I have been working on my clothing line Curvy Goddess which is due to launch soon. And I am working on some more music. I am officially in my second act and I can not wait to see what is in store for me.
Well there you have it, from starting out at 15 years old Mercedes has won numerous awards, been in movies, acting stages, hosting award shows and not to mention her numerous donations to families and fans. With her second act well underway I for one can not wait to see what the Diva has in store for us all.
