I see America!
A year ago (4th June 2016) we spotted landfall as we approached New York.
We’d had a pacy race up from Panama, past Cuba, the Caribbean and the Bermuda Triangle (where my iPhone would like to tag this photo!).
This last run in was proving tricky to helm. The boat was skittish and my watch leader was stumped and handed the helm to me. I fared no better and we discussed whether we were sailing off the continental shelf and that was creating turbulence. A tack out to deeper water seemed to do the trick.
On arrival into New York we discovered the culprit…we had lost a rudder and were sailing on a stump….no wonder we struggled. Like LMAX we had broken a rudder on the beach in Rio, and like them our replacement had failed.
