Publication completed: what went well & even better if

After alterations and improvements, I can officially say that my brand’s magazine is completed.

It contains 12 pages and the size is 12.3 cm x 18 cm. I am really happy with the final outcome but I will go into more depth later with an evaluation and conclusion of FMP project. For now, I want to discuss the magazine and reflect on it.

The whole process of constructing this magazine hasn’t been easy. I have had issues with sizing and InDesign but I have learnt from my mistakes. The size is a bit smaller than A5 which was the original size - I think it’s a perfect size now as it isn’t bulky and difficult to hold. The magazine is only a freebie and can easily be posted through people’s letterboxes if they are subscribed to our brand and it doesn’t take up much room if someone was to put it in their bag. It’s only a small spring collection so the small size is appropriate. With the quality of the paper, I am happy with the result considering I used an average quality one. The front cover wrap is different however with a thick-ish weight and matt texture. It isn’t heavy and the print quality is clear. I think it was a good idea to do the text run previously to see if I was happy with the outcome. The binding process is very professional and high end compared to it being stapled together like a cheap leaflet. It’s strong and expected to last a long time which is another benefit. The quality of the images is up to standard and they are not blurry or pixelated which was a worry of mine. I adore the use of illustration throughout with the signature flower drawing.

Even though I am satisfied with the magazine, I always feel like I could improve it and make it even better. Thinking back, I would have liked to add a content page but I am not sure as there are only a few pages in the zine so it would be unnecessary. I would have also liked to add a customer feedback page. This would involve selfies from customers showing their purchases and their recommendation for the brand. Also, I would have liked to talk more about our social media and even add a discount code in the magazine for first-time customers.

Besides that, I’m proud of myself for this magazine considering I have never made one before. I think the magazine is a great way to wrap up my FMP project and show every I have learned from my time at uca, rolled into one.
