Before I start this rant, (a rant that has been brewing up inside my brain for months now), I just want to make it clear that I don’t hate people who consider themselves make-up artists, whether that’s self-taught or through education - I just hate the proportion of them who happen to be egocentric fucks, who have nothing better to do than put people down, just because their make-up is different to what is considered the norm.
I’m going to start by saying that I believe make-up is a fantastic thing; it can be used to cover up damaged skin, give us a little ‘lift’ when we need it, be used to treat irritated skin and my favourite reason of all - self-expression. I’ve experimented with make-up from a very young age, and my styles have changed drastically over the years. There was the GLITTER EVERYTHING phase (even though you’d get little shards of it wedged in your eye throughout the day, you’d still reapply it the following morning); the red-lips statement phase, thinking you were queen of the world, strutting around in your black, knee-high, pointed toe, high-heeled boots; the emo black-eyeliner phase - if it’s not black and can’t be applied around my eyes as many times as it takes to start resembling Taylor Momsen, then I’m not interested; the ‘I’m so random’ make-up phase, where you’d put as many different colours on your eyelids as physically possible, so that when you said “Rawr is I love you in Dinosaur”, the scenie weenie community would accept you as one of their own; and somewhere along the way, you’ve landed here - you may be able to successfully stick on fake-eyelashes (depending what day it is) and you’re quite proud of your eyebrows on a kinda-daily basis. But even the days where they look somewhat questionable, you’ve learnt to rock that baby caterpillar chasing it’s mama look, and so you should.
So, why is there a constant underlying ridicule of amateur make-up users plastered all over every single one of my social media accounts? On, sometimes, a daily basis, I will read a status or a comment regarding some poor girl’s contouring skills or eyeshadow blending, that has actually caused me to lock my phone in public, just so I can check my make-up is looking alright in the reflection of my screen. Why is there such hostility and bitchiness towards make-up users regarding what may be the one thing that keeps that person’s insecurities at bay? Like, congratulations, your highlighter is on point and that eye-liner flick is flawless, now can’t you just be a nice human being and stop openly bullying other people just to try and make yourself feel better?
My personal favourite at the moment – Time Hop pictures… “Fucking hell, why did no one stop me from leaving the house? I can’t believe I EVER went out in public with eyebrows like that!” Although, upon further inspection, I discover that those ‘horrific’ eyebrows that you’ve publically criticised yourself for, happen to be almost identical to the way I applied mine this morning. And my reply to that? Take a fucking sick selfie and post that shit. Post it all over the internet girl, your eyebrows are the most perfect I have ever seen, don’t let some twat whose watched way too many make-up tutorials tell you otherwise!
So, in retrospect of what I’ve now realised is the pickiest blog post of all time… Just be yourself. Paint yourself however you wish and don’t you ever let yourself be pulled in to what society sees as perfect. Support eachother because we’re all in this together. Eyebrows or not.
