Bags and boroughs.
Today was cold and earmuffs with headphones were necessary. Instead of getting back on the train to Manhattan right now again, I’m settled in my cozy apartment after a day of errands with leftover pizza wearing a pair of fleece-lined leggings.
Since I moved to Queens at the end of August I’ve loved living here in Astoria, but for some reason it’s always a chore going back and forth between boroughs. This is completely illogical since I went 45 minutes downtown all the time from the Upper West Side, but walking 15 minutes to the 30th Ave NQ and dealing with the train transfer seems about as fun as walking a mile barefoot on ice right now. Whenever you leave for events, work, dates, dinner, you always have to be prepared for anything. Some mornings I’ll go to a meeting thinking I’ll have more time than I do, but then suddenly the day is half over and I don’t have time to go all the way back to Queens, so I don’t have what I need or a change of clothes. As a rule of thumb, when I leave my apartment I try and prepare for at least a day- you know, just in case. Comfortable flats, toothbrush, hair ties, extra clothes- the essentials. You never know what may happen in New York City or who you may run into… this is a mystical place of magical mysteries.
Back to my point, tonight it’s impossible for me to get back up and go out when I’m nice and settled in. So far I’m just stoked to play Yahtzee with Buddies, Netflix and chill.
Also, I’ve lost that “a girl’s gotta eat” mentality lately. I had plans tonight, but for whatever reason my better judgment told me that I’d rather stay in and eat leftovers than go downtown and make small talk with someone who already annoyed me for wanting me to go downtown (knowing I was coming from Astoria) in the first place. Really, you can only think of one place in the US’s biggest city to take me and it happens to be a pretentious hotel bar that is 45 minutes away from my apartment?
I digress. I’m sure this person is very nice. However, after 31 years of life, I think I may have reached a breakthrough! I think I finally learned how to tactfully cancel plans without making up a story, yet being honest without giving out too much information. All in all, tonight has been a complete success so far. I just may need some more pizza.
