One of our awesome Student Ambassadors, Joey, shares what he loves about living on campus at Teachers College!

What do Ulysses S. Grant, Riverside Church, and The Apollo Theatre all have in common? Well, I can see them all from my 12th floor room in New Residence Hall at TC! Finding out where to live in NYC can be a problem for many prospective students. Commuting wasn’t an option for me so I applied for housing and was lucky enough to receive a spot. My building, “New Res” might as well be a hotel. They keep it clean, safe, and there are always social events going on. Whether it’s a party in the courtyard to watch the next presidential debate, or just having pizza at the public safety meeting to boost attendance, the staff in New Residence Hall make it easy to settle into your new home. The best part of it all (besides being across the street from my classes) is the rich history of the area. If you look uptown you can see the iconic red neon glow of the Apollo Theatre. Built in 1913 and the stage for such greats as Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Elton John, just to name a few. Facing west towards the Hudson River you will see the ominous shadow of the Riverside Church Cathedral casted down upon Ulysses S. Grant’s Tomb. Inside a pair of nine-ton sarcophagi lay together, one holding the 18th President of the United States and the other his beloved wife Julia Dent Grant. These landmarks, and countless others are just a small part of the NYC experience. I’m just at the beginning of mine, don’t waste any more time starting yours!
